A small lab means you get principals, not a rotating cast. It also means we say no when we're full — we'd rather turn work away than staff it badly. Continuity is engineered, not promised: every build ships with documentation, runbooks, and a handover your own team can operate from, and you own the repository from day one. If an engineer is unavailable, the pod's docs and your ownership of the code mean nothing is hostage to one person's memory.
Labs grew out of SurgeX Digital, a growth consultancy for startups. Years of building the systems behind that work — data pipelines, dashboards, automation, applied AI — outgrew the "tech arm" label, so it became its own practice with its own name. Same founders, separate discipline: Digital runs growth; Labs ships software. Neither pretends to do the other's job.
